Tenant Employee Rescued After Cardiac Event at the Office

On June 26, 2025, a life-threatening emergency unfolded at a local office when a tenant employee suffered a sudden cardiac event. As the individual arrived at his workspace, a loud thump was heard by his desk, prompting immediate concern from fellow employees. Upon investigation, the employee was found slumped on the floor beneath his desk, unconscious and unresponsive.

Quick-thinking employees acted fast, calling 911 and alerting security for emergency assistance. Esperanza Escalante, a security officer, was the first to arrive at the scene, followed closely by other security personnel. They found the employee lying on his back, unresponsive and exhibiting signs of severe distress. Thomas Vargas, a coworker, was already beside the individual, trying to assess the situation.

Despite attempts to confirm a pulse, it was not immediately clear whether the individual was still alive. Esperanza Escalante quickly assessed the situation and observed that the employee was unconscious, with agonal breathing—a sign of impending cardiac arrest. Unable to find a pulse, Esperanza took immediate action, applying the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) pads to the individual's chest. The AED did not detect a pulse and delivered the first shock in an attempt to restore circulation.

Without hesitation, Esperanza Escalante began performing CPR chest compressions, with Thomas Vargas assisting her in the process. After a few moments, the AED delivered a second shock. The team continued CPR without interruption. Tim Tlusty, another employee, arrived and assisted by alternating CPR compressions with Esperanza, ensuring that chest compressions continued effectively.

The AED delivered a third shock, but no further shocks were necessary. At this point, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) arrived and took over life-saving procedures, stabilizing the individual and continuing CPR. The team’s prompt and coordinated actions were crucial in restoring the employee’s health and saving his life.

The individual was quickly transported to Northwest Hospital, where he received further care. As of July 3, 2025, the employee remains in the hospital but is now alert and responsive. He has been reported to be in good spirits, a testament to the quick response and teamwork of those involved in his rescue.

This incident highlights the importance of preparedness and swift action in the workplace during emergencies. Thanks to the fast response of Esperanza Escalante, Thomas Vargas, Tim Tlusty, and the CFD team, a life was saved that day. The teamwork and dedication of everyone involved serve as an inspiring example of how acting quickly and decisively can make all the difference in life-threatening situations.
